Looking for a simple, fragrant rice recipe that pairs perfectly with curries and stir-fries? This easy jeera rice is a staple in my Nepali kitchen. It’s buttery, aromatic, and cooks in just a few minutes—perfect for busy days or when you want a comforting meal without fuss.

Why You’ll Love This Jeera Rice

  • Quick and easy to make
  • Fluffy, fragrant, and buttery
  • Pairs perfectly with any curry or vegetable dish
  • Minimal ingredients and fuss

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice (soaked for 15–20 minutes)
  • 1–2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 ½ cups water (adjust as needed)

How to Make Easy Jeera Rice

  1. Turn on the cooker or stovetop pan and melt the butter.
  2. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds until aromatic.
  3. Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pan. Stir-fry gently for 2–3 minutes so each grain is coated in butter.
  4. Add salt to taste and pour water until it covers the rice. Stir once.
  5. Close the lid and cook on low heat until the rice is soft and fluffy.
  6. Once done, gently fluff the rice with a fork.

Serving Suggestions

Serve hot with any curry, dal, or vegetable stir-fry. This jeera rice also works as a simple base for fried rice or other one-pan meals.

NotAChef Tips

  • Soaking the rice beforehand ensures soft, separate grains.
  • Don’t over-stir once the water is added—this keeps the rice fluffy.
  • Add a little extra butter or ghee for richer flavour if desired.
